Atlanta Tops the Tony Hawk Foundations 2010 Grant list
May 2010

This is amazing!!
5/4/10 (Vista, CA) – "The Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark is a key component of Atlanta, Georgia’s downtown redevelopment effort, the Atlanta BeltLine. It’s also been a long time coming for a city that is one of the country’s major skateboarding hubs, and will help redefine an historic community that is lacking in public recreational space. For those and many other equally compelling reasons, the Tony Hawk Foundation Board of Directors voted last week to award Atlanta BeltLine, Inc. (the implementing entity of Atlanta’s comprehensive urban redevelopment initiative) $25,000 to help complete the 15,000-square-foot skatepark." -Read more

Brook Run Skate Park FINALLY underway
July 2006

Last week, Dekalb county put the Brook Run Skate Park project out to bid to builders. The cut off date for builders to get in their proposals is the 27th of July 2006. Then, from what we believe as the process, Dekalb county will review the proposals that were submitted. If they like what they see, Dekalb will award the contract to a builder. The builder will then have maybe 30 days (our estimate) to get their prep work done to start the job rolling and hopefully 3-4 months after they break ground we will have the first public park in the area to skate! Spread the word. We are excited!

Go Skateboarding Day
June 2006

Ok boys and girls. Go Skateboarding Day is upon us once again.

Go Skateboarding Day

What is Go Skateboarding Day you ask? Good question! Go Skateboarding Day is an international day for skaters to hit the streets and do what they love. We at Skate Parks of Atlanta encourage all skaters to get out, in the streets, and go skate June 21st. Show the city you're there. Go Skate. Have fun. Be safe. Before you go shoot off an email and tell them of your needs. Our city has to hear our voices. Still not sure who to write, it’s these fine people within our government. Let them know we are here. Educate them on our expectations. Show them we care about what we do. This is your chance to get out there and make your voice heard. Go skate and tell them Skate Parks of Atlanta sent ya!

Atlanta's Belt Line
May 2006

Atlanta is on the verge of creating a world class parks system with it's Belt Line Project. Skate Parks of Atlanta thinks to be a truly world class park system they need to recognize the most rapidly growing recreational activity in the world. Skateboarding! Please help Atlanta see our plee and hear our voices by commenting on the largest park endevour in our city's history. The Belt Line!! This Friday, May 19th, is the last day for community input via the beltline community web site. Take a few moments and fill out the surveys that pertain to skating within the beltline. Those are the Parks and Trails Survey, the Public Arts Survey and the General Community Input Survey.

We believe there are many creative ways to help the city and the skaters come together to make skating a postive thing rather than the negative activity it's been unjustly deemed. Help us help them see the light.

Some topics of discussion in your input could be:
  • No skate parks in Atlanta. Period!
  • There is a huge numbers of skaters disenfranchised in this great city
  • A skate park system needs to be established
  • Skatable art should be looked at as a viable solution as well as larger skate parks. These skate spots could be scattered through out the city/beltline as designated skate spots for skaters.
  • We are members/supporters of Skate Parks of Atlanta. We have a voice. Please listen.
Besides this community input for the beltline, emailing and calling your city representative is a great way to get your voices heard. Let them know you think the beltline is a great idea, but it could be even greater if it included an appropriate amount of skate spots too. Besides the Beltline, this city has other places to put skate parks. Encourage our leaders to look at those too. At the end of the page is contact info for City Council Members, the Mayor and Parks and Recreation.

Kennesaw Update - Meeting on Thursday
April 2006

Yes, this is not in Atlanta, but it's close so we are going to keep up with it...

This Thursday, April 13th at 6:30 the City of Kennesaw will be holding a final public meeting for the Swift-Cantrell Park! On the Master Plan... You guessed it! A SKATE PARK!!!

Your support is needed to make sure that it stays on the Master Plan and that it's given the proper respect and love it needs to become a killer park for the area.

It is important that you stand up and talk. All you have to say is that you support the skate park. Get on the list in the back of the room to say that. If not, no one thinks it is needed and could get bumped from the Master Plan. Your voice needs to be heard! Spread the word.

It will be beneficial if everyone who stands up give a different reason why the park should be built. Here are a few ideas for you to build off:

1) No parks in the area. Period!
2) Tons of Skaters (see .. 6 below for rough estimate on local area no's)
3) Tourist attraction (skaters and their families from all over will come)
4) Can be the first in the area to have a great park. Set a precedence.
5) Ball Parks etc... have plans for new parks within the parks and rec system every year, why not skate parks. Make this the first!
6) A shop in the area sold over 1300 boards alone in the month of Dec. Just imagine if a kid got a new board every two months. That is a minimum of 2600 kids that skate (who support this shop, not to mention the other shops in the area).
7) kids out on streets and on business property because they have no where else to go.
8) How many other people in the room get tickets and fines for the recreations you choose?
We encourage all of you (Kennessaw residents or not) to invite out friends and family as well. Its a big amount of land and there are many interested parties involved in planning what goes onto this property. Make sure a well thought out skate park gets on the list.

Support Belt Line Parks
April 2006

The Atlanta Development Authority has launched its community engagement framework.  One of the initial steps in this process has been to launch the BeltLine Community web site (www.beltlinecommunity.com), where you can learn more about the project, download the community engagement toolkit and, very importantly, express your views on the BeltLine and the inclusion of skate parks. We urge you to go to http://www.beltlinecommunity.com/communityinput.asp and fill out the surveys for General Community Input and Parks & Trails.  THESE ARE THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT SURVEYS FOR PARK ADVOCATES TO COMPLETE.  This is your opportunity to ensure that the BeltLine fulfills its potential for transforming Atlanta's park system by including skate parks.  Please make your voice heard!

Imagine a skate park system in the Atlanta area. Portland Oregon's City Council passed a 19 skatepark system just last year. Atlanta could do the same and with the Beltline we have the opportunity to do so. Spread the word and make your voices heard. Feel free to contact us with questions. We would love to hear what you may say.

Brookrun Status
March 2006

So, if you look below, there used to be a building on the site that the skatepark was going to sit. Well, since Dekalb received more funds for the park in November, they decided to demo the existing building and design a new building. So yes... that is where the delay has been (recently) to get the park going. There was a previous delay w/ funding, but that has been taken care of as of the November bond referendum passing. Then there was a delay w/ getting the construction docs finalized, but that is (we assume) taken care of. We are eagerly awaiting the plans to go out for bid. We've heard that will happen on the 1st of April. Lets not hope that is an April fools gag. Never-the-less, the actual skate park is not altered from the original plans and we are assured that a quality builder will be sought out to get this thing built properly. Word is, another nine (9) months before we can actually skate it. Lets hope this time frame is padded a bit.

As far as pads and fees, well we are keeping our fingers crossed that this park will be a skate at your own risk in the same fashion as the other park in Dekalb county is (Decatur's McKoy Park). No official word has been given on this. We do know however, that the building being designed is going to be a gateway into the park. If you have concerns about this, please contact Dekalb county representatives and voice your opinion.

One good thing, with that money acquired, the park will have lights for night skating! Thank god. The south is too hot for this not to happen. Any further updates will be posted ASAP.

Gwinnett Gears up for a park at Duncan Creek
March 21st 2005

It seems that our friends to the north are in the process of getting a great 20,000 sq ft park built. We are mentioning this because they have a design meeting scheduled for this week by park designer/builder Wally Holiday and feel those that read our site outside the metro Atlanta area need to be out there attending the meeting. For those that don't know Holiday is the builder of the latest Nashville Park and has a good standing with skaters for building good parks.

Below are some key details:

The workshop will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday March 24th at the Mill Creek High School Media Center, 4400 Braselton Highway, Hoschton.

Duncan Creek Park will be located nearby off Ga. 124. Construction starts in 2006.

Review the Gwinnett County site for more details.

Brook Run Final Plans Presented
March 20th 2005

Dekalb County Parks and Rec, landscape architectural firm Alta Mira, and Luther Lotz of Skate Parks of Atlanta, presented the final plans created by Site Design Group (SDG) for Dunwoody's new Brook Run Skatepark yesterday.

Skate Parks of Atlanta received a wide variety of input based on preliminary design concepts A & B presented by SDG last month. Those who were in attendance at yesterdays meeting were overall very pleased with the final design that has materialized from all the hard work put forth by your input on the initial concepts. You can view the most recent version below:

Piedmont Park Update
February 17, 2005

"Mayor Shirley Franklin today announced the formation of the North Woods Expansion Master Plan Task Force. The task force is comprised of 11 individuals charged with reviewing the preliminary master plan developed over the past year by a community advisory group, consultants and city staff for the North Woods of Piedmont Park."

What does this mean for the skate park on the proposed plan? Time will tell. There has been no public opposition to this element of the park's expansion plan that we have seen, so we would like to believe that the skate park wont leave the plan any time soon. Keep in mind that this is a community process and if opposition does arise, things could change. The best thing you can do is to keep attending your NPU meetings and staying on top of your encouraging emails to Mayor Shirley Franklin, your City Council representative and Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs Commissioner, Diane Harnell Cohen about the need for skate parks in Atlanta. We will too.

Remember, until this plan is approved by City Council and the Mayor, a skate park, or any other element you may like, will not be created at Piedmont Park. We cannot stress enough how important it is for you to send your emails.

SKATE PARK at Piedmont Park?

(Concept Only - Not Final Design)

As many of you are aware, Skate Parks of Atlanta has had a representative on the Advisory Committee for Piedmont Park's North Woods Reclamation Project for the last year now. The above rendering is what has resulted in our efforts in regards to the skate park. But the fight is not over and the proposed plan has not gone through the final city processes to be approved yet.

Getting out to your local NPU (Neighborhood Planning Unit) meeting NOW will help support the Proposed Skate Park in Piedmont Park.

It is very important that you show the rest of Atlanta you want this for it to be approved by City Council. We all know it’s wanted / needed. Now is the time that we let the city know.
